Buddha on 105-107 Washington Street

This is one of the Buddhas that lines the exterior of 105-107 Washington Street right south of the World Trade Center site in lower Manhattan. The building is one of three that still exist from a time in the late 19th and early 20th centuries when this area was a thriving immigrant neighborhood.

Now it’s the focus of a preservation effort by a few folks that I talked to for this story for The World.

Thanks to Alia Malek for telling me about the Save Washington Street effort. Alia wrote about the Arab history of the neighborhood in her great book A Country Called Amreeka.
